Here’s a little recap of Wanda’s and my latest adventure with a few of our good friends from around the country.

The Furnace Creek 508. ” The toughest 48 hours in sports”

Last year, after crewing three years in a row for Jim ” Pancake Tortoise ” Ryan, aka Jimbo, I told Wanda I wasn’t going back to the 508 unless I was riding a bike. Crewing is fun but riding is more fun. Wanda agreed so we twisted some arms and convinced Jim to captain a second tandem, with Jeanie Tomkalski as stoker. Jim is from Sammamish, WA, Jeanie is from Elmira, NY. We entered the race as the Northern Spring Peepers, a two tandem, 50+, mixed team. We’d ride as a relay team trading off at each time station. There are eight sections of the course with time stations at the end/beginning of each section. Wanda and I rode first and did the odd numbered sections. Jim and Jeanie did the even numbers sections including the finish. Our sections were …

1. Valencia to California City, 84 miles, 4700 feet of climbing
3. Trona to Furnace Creek, 99miles, 5700 feet
5. Shoshone to Baker, 56miles, 1200 feet
7. Kelso to Almost Amboy, 34miles, 1900 feet

For this adventure, as crew, we recruited Colin Bailey of Wellsville, NY and Dana Davidson, of Calais, ME, ( Wanda’s brother ).They’d drive the van which carried our teammates and equipment, and provided headlights to ride by at night. They’d also keep track of our calorie intake, refuel us with food and drink as needed, and do pretty much anything we asked them to. Although, after being stung on the knee by a bee on a pre-race warmup ride, I asked Colin to suck the venom out and he quickly refused. He informed me that the crew isn’t required to do any task that involved sucking or licking. So now at least now we knew our crew’s limits. Fortunately, no sucking or licking was required during the race and our crew performed most excellently.

Trash talking with our friends from Gray Goose, a 4x tandem team.

The start to california city, 84 miles, 4700 ft

http://ridewithgps.com/users/63861/activities

The start was a bit of a head game. Its a race, right ? So you’re supposed to go fast. But its a 508 mile race so you need to be conservative, too. Plus, being a tandem on an uphill start I fully expected to get dropped right away. And, on this section, we were matched up with Willy and Debra, a tandem pair from last year’s record setting team, Long Eared Jerboa. In 2011 they finished in 37 hrs 6mins. We like Willy and Debra, having met them at a ride in California last winter, but we wanted to put the smack-down on them asap in hopes it would become an ” out of sight, out of mind” thing for them. I certainly didn’t want a head to head race on our hands. Plus, Willy and I had various beers bet on different sections of the race and lots of transcontinental email trash talking to back up.
Early on, we and they traded positions. We’d pass them on a climb, they’d pass us on the downhills. It was fun but I wanted to be over the first climb with a comfortable time cushion. I knew there was a big, sweeping, climbing bend in the road coming up so I told Wanda we’d hit it hard there in hopes of getting out of their view. So we “attacked” and left them a little ways behind. We’d look over our shoulders but couldn’t see them so we got back into a rhythm we could maintain. It’s a long race and no sense blowing up on the first section.
Then, over the first hilltop we go for an early highlight. On the race’s first big descent we had a new PR on our tandem, 58.5 mph ! We passed solo riders in the blink of an eye. Plus, we were in the mix of things, not dropped off the back of the race like I’d feared. That made us feel great.

Cooling off after our 59mph downhill

The windmill climb at mile 50 and the section north from Mojave were tough grinds into the wind. The last section into California City was tailwind fast but my back was aching after all the pushing into the wind and up the hills. That worried me but, luckily, on the second leg I felt great. I guess I needed an 85 mile warm up !

More climbing

I felt we had a solid lead now over Willy’s tandem team, Gray Goose. They with four bikes, us with two. Different categories but still all tandems. At the first time station, my confidence turned to nervousness as one of their support vehicles sat waiting in the shade. This happened at every time station. One of their vehicles would be sitting off to the side, lurking, waiting, stalking us, licking its lips. We had no idea how far behind the Geese were but it seemed like they were nipping at our heels, so we pushed on.

Jim and Jeanie heading towards Trona

Trona to Furnace Creek, 98 miles

http://ridewithgps.com/users/63861/activities

This section was my favorite despite the big ass climb up Townes Pass. Since we started the race later than the solo riders, we arrived at the Trona bump, the first hilltop of this section, in the dark. Too bad because the view is amazing. The twisty downhill was fairly thrilling as most of the corners were in shadow despite our light and Colin’s excellent driving. The road was smooth until the straight run out were it turned crappy. There were long, lengthwise cracks in the pavement that grabbed our wheels once for a second and spooked me. I stayed far away from them after that.
The Panamint Valley was a fun section. We caught and passed several solo riders. That always makes ya feel good.
Then came Townes Pass, a giant climb we’d thought about all year as we trained. We hit the base feeling strong and solid. Up, up,up we went and before long it got steep and we were grinding away. Looking down at the white line and getting in a mental groove was the best thing to do because each time I looked up I saw the zig zagging stream of red taillights heading for the moon, it seemed. After an hour or so I looked behind at the lights in the valley and was amazed at how high we’d climbed. It’s a tough hill for sure with extended grades over 10% ! I’d often think how nice it would be to not turn the crank another time and instead put my foot down and take a break but that wasn’t to be. This climb took us almost two hours. Two hours grinding away at less than ten miles per hour. Nearing the top we saw a coyote trotting along in the ditch to our left. He’d peek over the berm at us then duck away, trot some more then peek again. It was a nice distraction. We also had the music cranking on the external speakers which helped tremendously. Although, much to Jimbo’s dismay, we vetoed his rockin’ guitar driven soundtrack and requested Kris Bailey’s workout mix that included various 80s pop hits including something by the Backstreet Boys. The big thumpin’ beats of that crap got us up and over the top, haha.
At the top of Townes Pass we chose to keep on rolling since it wasn’t cold and we were plenty warm from climbing. There were about a dozen riders parked along the road regrouping, so we had an unobstructed start to the downhill. I was glad since i was hoping we’d have no traffic to deal with. I did notice out of the corner of my eye a rider mount up and pull out behind us but I didn’t give him much thought. So over the top and down we go, slightly blinded by the flashing yellow caution sign warning us about the steep grade and sharp turns ahead. After the second turn I thought I heard a freewheel buzzing, then I realized there was another bike’s headlight beaming alongside ours. Then, zip, we were passed by a solo riding carving the turns faster than I dared. This was a bummer because before long the road straightens out and we’d be able to really fly. But it wasn’t to be. I didn’t dare rip around this guy and plunge into the dim darkness of our tiny headlight. Having been a follow support driver in the same situation I knew it would be hard to pass with the van, so I trailed the solo for quite a while . Our brakes squealed in protest since tandems prefer to go downhill like a rocket sled. It was kind of nice though having someone ahead to show the road’s twists and turns and dips and rises. Halfway down the mountain the road goes totally straight so I let go of our howling brakes and we accelerated like a race motorcycle and blasted around the rider and his van. Lighting was a little sketchy for a minute or so but Colin was soon on our tail and we continued to plunge away with a clear shot ahead. I have to say, I was certain we were going warp speed but the gps said otherwise. High 40s felt like 80mph in the dark. I can only imagine how it felt to Jim in years past as he descended this same hill on a single bike at over 60 mph, at night !
Once on the floor of Death Valley we rolled along comfortably with no wind to deal with and pleasant temperatures in the 70s. The red tail lights ahead made for nice rabbits to chase. Then with about fifteen miles to go to the time station we passed a beautiful coyote standing to our right just off the white line. So close I was worried it would get spooked and do something unpleasant. As we rolled by I said, ” stay there, dog, don’t do anything stupid ” . It just watch us ride by without moving a muscle. Once past, we could hear several others yip yipping in the darkness. We picked up the pace a bit and laughed, nervously.
Then a weird thing happened. I felt sleepy. Not tired from riding but sleepy. I looked at the gps’s clock and saw it was 11:30pm. I’d lost track of time with all the excitement of the race so I guess it was ok to feel sleepy.
Soon we rolled into the Furnace Creek time station and handed the baton to Jim and Jeanie. A quick bathroom break for everyone and off we went. Before long we caught up to our friend, Gary ” Bear” . He rode the race solo on a recumbent. In the van’s headlights we could see Jim and Jeanie chatting with Gary for a few minutes then wave goodbye. That was the last thing I remember until the cheering as Jim and Jeanie crested Jubilee Pass. I’d gone out like a light and had an amazing nap. It was the easiest climb up Jubilee ever

I goofed up our gps data from the third leg and on the forth section the battery quit so no data to show.

As it turned out, the third stage, 55 miles with only 1200 feet of climbing, which I had envisioned as the easiest section turned out to be a long slog up a 1% rise into a slightly diagonal headwind, a tandem’s least favorite situation. Just enough struggling to make it not much fun. We were glad to finish that section !

Second day crossing the Mojave desert towards Baker, CA

The fourth section, and our last, was all uphill then all downhill. 17 miles up, 19 down. Wanda liked this climb the best. I just dealt with it as it was getting hot ( 90s)) and the sun was beating on our backs. At the top I was nearly out of fluids so I signaled for another bottle which Dana delivered in an amazing feat of driving and parking and jumping and running. I almost didn’t ask for more water because I knew it was all downhill now so what’s the big deal ? But I calculated in my head that it would take us at least half an hour to get to the bottom of this downhill section if we went 35-40 mph. Then I stopped in my mental tracks. ” Wow…. at least half an hour to get to the bottom of this hill “. What an amazing thing to comprehend, a half hour of downhill, at speed. That sounds like cycling nirvana but the truth is that at speed you can’t move around on the bike like you want, you can’t stand and pedal, you can’t stretch your back or anything. You just sit there, and sit there, and sit there some more. It hurts after a while, a bike isn’t really very comfy to just sit on. You have to ride it, not sit on it. Plus, it was getting hotter and hotter as we dropped lower and lower to the valley floor. Again, we were anxious to finish this section as we were sure there was smoke trailing from various parts of our anatomies. Wanda’s feet were on fire, and for me, the smoke was billowing from an area slightly more north of the feet
Finally, we see the time station in the distance. Although, the clear desert air makes things look closer than they actually are so it still took a while to finish our section. But what a blast at Time Station 7 ! A hawaiian hula party is in full swing, with grass skirts, tropical drinks, leis, and everything. What a way to finish !

Celebrating our last ride of the race

In the end we achieved our goals for the race. To finish, to have fun, and to break the record. We finished in 33hrs15mins. Needless to say, we were all delighted.
We’d planned and trained and thought about the 508 all year and it certainly lived up to our every expectation. I’m pretty sure we’ll be back to challenge the desert again.

All smiles at the finish !

Ps ( this added two weeks later) The 508 is like an alien bug that buries itself in your brain. I figured once the race was over we’d put it behind us and look to other adventures. Instead, we rethink, relive and rehash the race in our minds and conversations. And, just yesterday while riding, Wanda was saying things like, ” ya know, if we coulda … “, and, ” next time we should ….”.

First up is Harold Brill, a determined recruiter of cyclists, novice or experienced, for his team at Tour de Cure and all around interesting guy

Harold, where did you growing up?

I did growing up ?? in Caroline…a little one-corner ‘burg east of Ithaca on Rt. 79. I’m a product of tiny-town and the IthacaSchool District.

Spencer and assorted railroad hotels.

Your Family ?

Wife of 25 years Chris and two boys…Connor – soon to be 16 and a sophomore in HS and Seneca – 19 and in college at Cayuga Comm. College in Auburn. Chris and Connor ride too…Seneca is a work in progress.

Pets ?

2 foolish and untrainable mutt dogs, 1 foundling stray cat and 1 other cat that thinks he owns the joint.

What type of jobs have you had ?

You name it. From a 15 mile paper route that I rode when I was 12, I went on to a dairy farm while I was in high school, worked in a roller skating rink or three, worked for Ithaca DPW on streets, paving and a mason crew, worked in a technical glass factory, did maintenance work on the Ithaca Commons (for which I have never forgiven myself), ran a mobile DJ service for a decade, worked in construction/renovation for a couple of municipalities, taught motorcycle rider-ed classes in Dryden and Ithaca, worked in Buildings and Grounds and maintained all the athletic fields and pool for Dryden Schools, finally went to work for the railroad under Conrail and eventually became a locomotive engineer for Norfolk Southern…that’s where I hang out now…and hopefully will retire from.

What’s your current job ?

I’m still an engineer and run trains on a regular route between Binghamton and Saratoga Springs or Mechanicville NY. The route may change sometimes but the gig remains the same…lug big loads of stuff from A to B and back.

What’s the best thing about being an engineer ?

Pays well. Get to play with big, zillion dollar toys and work pretty much on my own most of the time. A window with a view of a lot of countryside. And the challenge of getting it right.

What’s the worst thing about being an engineer ?

Without a doubt…Too much time away from home and family. I’ve missed more than I care to think about with my wife and kids. It’s tough on a family working on-call with unpredictable hours and days off and not enough of either one.

What’s the longest train you’ve driven ?

Longest was 14,000 ft. train full of brand-new automobiles and SUVs. Heaviest was 20,000 tons of coal.

What should people know about trains ?

Always expect a train at a crossing and never trespass on tracks or trains.

DO NOT try to beat the train at a crossing or even remotely think that a train can stop quickly. EVER. I never want to hit another car.

Whats your favorite movie ?

Tough call but if I had to pick just one or two…Kubrick’s 2001 or maybe the old Blade Runner. Ask me later…I might not have seen my favorite yet.

Whats your favorite types of music ?

Depends on when you ask me. Today it’s kind of a metal slant but there’s days when Ga Ga or Jimmy Cliff doesn’t scare me much either. Eclectic…yeah, that’s the word. I keep my iPod on shuffle.

Your favorite bands or artists ?

All time? Blue Oyster Cult…possibly with a little Korn or U2 for seasoning. You just never know…

Whats your favorite train song ?

‘Train of Consequences’ Megadeth

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-G38VlmOib8

Why do u ride ?

Hmmm…How to narrow it down? I love seeing the world going by a little slower mostly. I’ve seen more cool things since I took up riding again than in all my years of driving by the same places. I love being out on the road or in the woods just chewing up miles and seeing what there is to see. Oh yeah…it keeps me passing my company physicals too and as a bonus, I don’t look like the Michelin Man anymore. I lost about 60 pounds when I got back on a bike and feel great. Rule #5. And then there’s the fun of beating the hills at their own game. Bring it.

Whats your earliest cycling memory ?

Lots of good ones later on but the very first is getting my foot wedged in between the spokes and chainstay on my sister’s blue Schwinn when we tried to ride to a friend’s house with her pedaling and me on the back fender. I might have been 6 or 7. I can still hear the spokes pinging off my left sneaker…right up until the moment when the wheel grabbed my foot and jammed it into the frame hard enough to peel a swath off my ankle like a banana peel. The scar is still there.

Another real early one was that incredible feeling of flying down a big hill on an old Spyder bike with a bent front wheel. It seemed like 100 miles an hour. No shirt, no helmet, no fear…right up until the tee in the road where I went down on my chest and scrubbed off most of the hide from navel to collar bones. My Mom spent the afternoon picking gravel out of the abrasions and patching the skin-leaks. Now you know why I’m still a little paranoid about twitchy forks.

Describe your dream ride

Locally… I’ve always wanted to ride the Erie Canal from end to end or likewise the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon but never seem to have the time.

Long distance…From my driveway to my original riding partner Doc Annabel’s house in Virginia by way of Skyline Drive without any involvement from ambulances, EMTs or a hearse. Failing that…almost anything of 1000+ miles in one outing would do. Where isn’t so important…just the chance to get there would be fine.

Why tour d cure ?

Mostly by accident. It started as a fun ride with Doc to try to make our first real Century. Neither of us had ever ridden in an organized event before so I figured…why not? But then I found out my employer had a corporate Tour de Cure team that I could run a local branch of and one thing led to another. I started finding out more about diabetes along the way and realized how many people around us have it or are affected by it and now it’s become a major project. Funny how stuff like that happens.

Tell us about Team PowerTrain 2011

We started in 2010 on the first Finger Lakes Tour de Cure as Team NS Thoroughbreds with I think 10 or 12 on the roster. We had no idea what we were doing or what we were in for. By sheer dumb luck, the ride went great and everyone had a ball so we figured we’d have another go at it. In 2011 we kept the name but grew to 36 riders and raised over $14,000 for the American Diabetes Association. Our team was dedicated to Leanne Cardone who passed away from complications of diabetes in 2011. Her father Donnie is a retired railroad conductor and one of my all-time heroes so it really meant a lot to do something like this for her and her family. We had people from New York, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Virginia and Florida all come to town to ride with us. It was an incredible event.

Now we have our new name and 31 people signed up already for 2012 so again, it’s looking like another great Tour in August.

What are your goals for Team PowerTrain 2012 ?

We’re shooting for 50 riders on the team and a fundraising total of at least $25,000. We have an amazing bunch of people doing all kinds of events all summer leading up to the Tour on August 18th. There’s stuff from a scrapbooking Scrap-a-thon to barbeques, motorcycle rides, team bike rides, bike raffles, coupons…you name it, and we’re doing it. We’re working at being the top fundraiser in our Tour again so the bar is pretty high.

We’ll dedicate this year’s Tour to Alton White, the husband of one of our team who has fought diabetes for many years but still comes out to support Angie when she rides. Our main goal is to have a blast and raise a ton of money for ADA while we’re at it.

How can people get involved?

Anyone can join Team NS just by going to our Tour de Cure page and signing up. A quick search finds us pretty quickly. Even though we’re a railroad-related team, most of our riders aren’t even connected to the railroad in any way but by the jersey. We’re open to anyone who wants to ride with us regardless of ability or fitness level. You can also ride solo in the Tour de Cure or form your own team…whatever suits your fancy. The ADA webpage (http://tour.diabetes.org) has a ton of information about the ride but I’ll talk to anyone who’s interested too. The best way to catch me is by email at rule281@htva.net or message me on Facebook.

And by the way…

There’s this bike shop we found that supports us a lot too. When I was shopping for my first ‘real’ bike, these guys were about the only ones that never missed a beat when a scruffy old fat guy came in on a sadly dilapidated Trek, with limited capitol and knowing pretty much nothing. I’d had plenty of ‘bike snob’ attitudes already so I was a little discouraged about the whole idea and was about to start hitting yard sales for a bike. I’d made the rounds of other places where you need a platinum card just to park out front and you don’t get the time of day unless you speak Campy fluently and know who won every stage of the ‘47 Giro d’Italia. No other new-bike shop in my travels made me feel like I was worthy of the sport at my age and BMI but PK and Co. took up the challenge and got me going. The rest is history.

In addition, this was the only shop that was willing to offer a break of any kind to my newly formed team of rank amateurs other than putting our poster in the window. Now, they keep a good share of the NS pack rolling even though some of us don’t know a derailleur from a downtube and would probably hurt ourselves on a daily basis without proper care and feeding. Paul and Sloan and crew…thanks guys!

Thank YOU, Harold !

Dealer Service Information: hanging bicycles with carbon fairings

02/29/2012

Hanging bicycles with carbon fairings

Some carbon fiber composite rims have a tall aerodynamic cross section, or carbon fairing. In many cases, the carbon fairing portion of the rim is non-structural and is not meant to bear weight. If excessive pressure is applied to a carbon fairing, it could be cracked or damaged.

What you should do

Use caution when servicing or storing bicycles that use wheels with carbon fairings. Also avoid over-clamping a carbon fairing in bicycle racks, car carriers, or other mechanisms.

If you aren’t sure if the rim can support the weight of the bicycle, don’t hang the bicycle by the wheel. Examples include these wheels:

Bontrager Aura 5 wheels

Pre-2012 Aeolus wheels

Both of these wheel types use a non-structural fairing which could crack from the weight of a bicycle.
